How to Wash Graphic Tees Without Cracking the Print
Almost every cracked, peeling graphic tee got that way from the same three things: hot water, high-heat drying, and fabric softener. Fix those and a printed tee lasts years.
The short version
- Turn the tee inside out before it goes in the machine.
- Wash cold, 30°C / 86°F or lower, on a gentle or normal cycle.
- No fabric softener, no bleach.
- Tumble dry low, or hang dry in shade.
- Iron inside out, or with a cloth over the print — never directly on it.
Why each step matters
Inside out
In the drum, the print rubs against the machine and against other garments. Turning the shirt inside out puts the fabric on the outside and takes the abrasion off the design. This is the single highest-impact habit.
Cold water
Heat softens the ink and relaxes the fibres it is bonded to. Repeated hot washes are what produce the fine cracking you see across older prints. Cold also stops dark colours bleeding and reduces shrinkage.
No fabric softener
Softener works by coating fibres in a waxy film. That film sits over the print, dulls it, and stops water-based inks breathing. If you want softness, use less detergent rather than adding softener.
Low-heat drying
Tumble dryers do more damage than washing machines. High heat both shrinks cotton — mostly in length — and stiffens the print. Low heat, or hang drying in shade, avoids both. Avoid direct sun, which fades colour.
Ironing
Direct heat on a print will melt or gloss it, sometimes in a single pass. Iron the garment inside out, or lay a thin cotton cloth over the design. Steam only, no heavy pressure.
Removing a stain near a print
Do not bleach. Spot-treat with an oxygen-based stain remover on the fabric only, working from the outside of the stain inward, then cold wash as normal. Rubbing hard across a print lifts the edges.
